Steve Renouf

Steve Renouf first started training in Shukokai Karate in 1974 but felt that competition Karate was not what he was looking for and so he left and didn't practice for a number of years. But the desire to learn a Martial Art never left him so several years later, he joined the Kenyukai Karate. Having practiced there for a couple of years, he still felt that sport karate did not offer him what he was looking for. It was around that time that a friend told him about this guy who was practising karate like he had never seen before - it seemed to be soft and flowing. That was in 1982, the style was Shoto-Ryu Karate and the teacher was Raymond Reid.

That was when Steve felt he had found what he'd been looking for - a style which concentrated on the Martial Art rather than competition. At this time, Ray was practising under Viv Nash and so Steve got to meet and practise with him too. It was around this time that Viv Nash had started introducing the Tai Chi into the practice. Originally, the Tai Chi was introduced to improve the Karate (as the style of Karate practised was along similar lines) but over a period of time, the Tai Chi began to dominate the practice, for Ray within the Jersey club. And so it was that the Jersey Tai Chi Foundation came into being.

Steve's achievements to date:

1st Dan: August 1987
2nd Dan: September 1992
3rd Dan: October 2000
4th Dan: March 2014
5th Dan: March 2019

5th Dan is currently the highest grade awarded within the Jersey Shoto Ryu/Tai Ch Martial Arts.

Beyond 5th Dan, the person is expected to be self-motivated to work on their own development and self-improvement.

In January 2020, Steve participated in a unique 14 day internal martial arts retreat (Martial Camp 2020) organised by:

On returning to Jersey from travelling, I was interested in finding an holistic form of exercise that encompassed the wellbeing of mind, body and spirit. I happened to meet somebody who was already practising with the JTCF and so my Tai Chi journey with the club began, that was in 1995. Since that time I have taken about ten years out to bring up my family and while mostly away from the club class, I still practised whenever I could. I found that the experience I had gained up to that point helped me immensely with my balance, mental focus and calmness. My practice with the club began again in earnest over 9 years ago.

The philosophical aspects of Tai Chi are of great interest to me. I have always been on a journey of personal growth and I continue to realise and discover that when we weave these aspects into our everyday life, we can enhance our mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing immensely. I enjoy all the different practices that the JTCF classes have to offer, foundation work, martial art application, technique, harmonising with a partner, the form, two-man set, push-hands and Qigong. It is a continuously deepening practice of self-discovery.

We are very fortunate to have an ever increasing breadth of knowledge from our Principal and Founder, Raymond Reid, and our Senior instructor Steve Renouf. I feel very privileged to be part of The JTCF.

In 2017 I was fortunate to have the opportunity to teach Tai Chi for Health and Wellbeing to a small group of people and I did the same again in 2018. Unfortunately Covid-19 arrived in 2019 so I did not begin another class. Two students from my 2018 class joined the JTCF and are still enjoying practising with the club.

My achievements within the club to date:

1st Section Diploma to 3rd Level
2nd Section Diploma to 3rd Level
Promotion to Instructor role in September 2021

I was waiting for a form of exercise which would involve moving and stretching the whole body. I was quite enjoying running at the time and, although I felt fit, my joints often ached. I read about Tai Chi and it appealed to me as it it seemed to be a more holistic type of exercise, involving the body, mind and spirit working together. I found out about the Jersey Tai Foundation (in the JEP) and attended my first class at the club in 2002.

After each class, I felt looser, more relaxed and refreshed. I started to learn about the martial aspects of tai chi and about energy work. I enjoyed practising small sections of the form and other specific exercises between the weekly classes. As time passed, I could feel the tai chi affecting all aspects of my life positively. For example, my balance and coordination improved, I was able to be calmer and more relaxed in tense work situations, and was generally more aware in interactions with others.

Once I'd learnt and remembered the the form, I thought I had mastered tai chi but that was just the beginning! I have since learnt that there is always more to discover, which makes for a verhy rich and deep experience.

After a few years, I was able to attend a second weekly class, which helped to develop my practice. Later on, I was honoured to be promoted to assistant instructor. I get a lot of satisfaction from demonstrating and communicating to other students, helping them to learn and progress. I have also enjoyed assisting with extra courses which the club has run from time to time.

I have had a few health problems over the years but I'm sure that my tai chi practice has helped my recovery.

We are lucky to be taught by passionate and dedicated Principal Raymond Reid and senior instructor Steve who, between them, continually develop and update their own practice in order to be able to pass on their knowledge effectively.

My achievements within the club to date:

1st section diploma to 3rd level
2nd section diploma to 3rd level
Promotion to Instructor in 2016
